Meter Services

The Water Quality Department is responsible for reading all residential and commercial water meters within the city limits of Terrell on a monthly basis. In 2023, the City of Terrell completed over 6000 meter replacements to AMI meters.

What Is AMI?
AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure. It is a method of using communication technology to read meters remotely without having to access the meter located in meter boxes in the ground.

How Does It Work?
The City of Terrell has chosen a fixed-base network that provides two-way communication from the meter box to strategically located Base Stations. The City replaced water meters throughout our system with meters equipped with a meter transceiver. The meter transceiver collects and transmits meter reading data, unique identification numbers, operating status, and various alarms at regular intervals to the Base Stations.

Check for leaks. Sometimes you may receive a bill that seems unusually high. In this case, it’s possible that you have a leak. To get to the bottom of things, check for continuously running toilets, or leaking faucets and shower heads in your residence. Also, if you have an automatic irrigation system, make sure to check all of its components for leaks.

If you determine you have a leak, please contact a licensed plumber to repair the leak.  If the leak is on the City side (between the meter and the street) of the meter, please contact us here: Report A Meter Leak

Commercial Customers:

The City of Terrell also provides construction meters to Contractors working in the City of Terrell.  To rent a construction/hydrant meter, please contact our  Utility Billing Dept for pricing information and instructions.
