Hydrant Flushing & Chlorination

Why are water lines flushed?

The flushing of hydrants is an important part of regular maintenance to ensure water quality and safety.

Maintain Water Quality: To disinfect and ensure that fresher water with a higher level of disinfectant is present. The Water Quality department monitors the disinfectant levels closely and takes samples from various locations throughout the City.

Clean Water Mains: Small water particles can build up inside the water distribution pipes over time. The Water Quality department uses flushing to pull water at high velocity through the pipes to a discharge point.

Fire Flow Tests: Fire hydrants are tested periodically to ensure that the hydrant is working properly and ready for an emergency.

Will my water bill be effected?

System flushing does not impact the cost of water to the citizens of Terrell. The City of Terrell is contracted with the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) for a set amount of water. The annual City usage normally falls below the required amount the City of Terrell pays to NTMWD. Flushing fire hydrants does not add to the annual bill from the NTMWD and does not effect customer's water bills.
